Music round-up: Beyonce is 'Drunk in love' and ready to surprise you
The bandwagon hype of music is rising and artists around the world are flexing their musical muscles.
New Delhi: When the strings judder, when the drums thump, when the blow comes out in a mesmerising tune through those wooden holes, when the drone gives that firm harmonic base, when the keys are pressed artistically and when they narrate verses, in voices high and low then they sketch something. They inject something that lasts for generations.
The bandwagon hype of music is rising and artists around the world are flexing their music muscles.
So, from now on IBNLive will cater to you all the news and noise going around in the universe of music.
From last Sunday to this Saturday a lot has happened. Anniversaries - Birth and Death, Releases - new and memories of old. Gigs and shows. A lot. Nostalgia, warm memories.
Let's discuss the music of the week in three phases:
And the Anniversaries - Birth and Death.
So, let's knock the door from the West.
Surprise! Yes, Beyonce surprised the internet, the celebs and the fans with her self-titled surprise album which has 14 tracks and 17 music videos. The album has already sold around 80,000 copies on iTunes in just three hours after its release and is expected to debut number one on the charts.
She shocked the music industry when the album was up on iTunes late Thursday evening.
The album includes collaborations with her husband Jay Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Drake, The Dream and Frank Ocean among many.
And when asked about the reason for surprise the pop star said 'I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it'.
The stealth release of her fifth studio album has already exploded the internet. Here is the preview of the video of 'Drunk in Love' from her new album featuring Jay Z.
Neil Young's 'Live at Cellar Door' is a new entry with something old. The album is harvested from his six concerts in the end of 1970s at small Washington, D.C club.
The concerts were solo with just voice-piano-and acoustic guitar and the songs are stellar. This is something from his acoustic best.
Something from Young's classics is really a feast and undoubtedly divine. Go, grab it!
The Velvet Underground!
This week that year 'The Velvet Underground' had released an album named 'White Light/White Heat'. The Velvet Underground was a classic but unfortunately that did not sell. Maybe, the connoisseurs weren't ready.
However their debut wasn't great but soon they kicked off with 'White Light/White Heat', their second studio album. The super deluxe edition of the album is released marking its 45th Anniversary.
Revisit 'White Light/White Heat'. Here is one of the tracks from the album.
Well, under this the greatest one is from David Thibault who has nailed the Elvis holiday classic 'Blue Christmas'. The 16 year old Quebec teenager sings melody just like Elvis.
However, copying Elvis is a thorny job. Elvis is one of my favourite artists from his era and 'Blue Christmas' is a melody that gives me nostalgia.
The video of David Thibault has already been viewed half a million times since it was up earlier this week. Although the guy needs to work more to get that King Presley's breadth.
Another good news for Elvis fans is the new book that Presley's last love and her fiancee Ginger Alden is writing. Ginger just released the cover for her upcoming memoir, Elvis and Ginger: Elvis Presley's Fiancee and Last Love Finally Tells Her Story.
The model and actress Alden will narrate her relationship with the King, her bond and the rumours and the tabloid attention she was caught in just after his death. The cover of the book has a photograph of the couple in the snowy white winter.
However, she is the woman who found Elvis dead on that bathroom floor. So, we expect her to humanize the legend and of course know him more and more.
December 8th. I am not sure if I should call the day a melancholic one or was it cheerful! Not sure. Just not.
A great artiste was born and one was shot dead. Are you one of those fans who cry and celebrate, death and birth? Do you worship dead celebrities? Then it's a long-winded way, it was your day.
The history of classic rock would have not been so charming with these voices. Darn, I am fan of both. But let's get onto this with my favourite.
John Lennon (9 October 1940 - 8 December 1980):
The immortalized symbol of peace and love.
'Imagine no possessions' the tall man with those round specs lived in a swanky apartment complex and the United States called him a national threat for his sanctified being, his counterculture presence that pulled the masses to rise against government and say no to Vietnam war. 'And the world will be one'.
On December 8 1980, the middle aged man was shot four times with hollow-point bullets by Mark David Chapman. It was a tragic day in the history of rock n roll, in the history of mankind.
But why was he shot is a point to moot. And I am not getting on that. I and you love his music. He gave brilliant records and that's enough to appreciate him. The British artiste John Winston Ono Lennon was one of four Beatles. A fonder member of one of most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in the history of popular music.
And even when he started his solo career in 1970 after the band was disbanded, his worldwide fame was untouched. His stinging wit was so alive even in his self presentation. The 'smart Beatle' as they named him recorded gorgeous melodies to evoke peace, love and give you a dreamlike world-weariness.
Lennon is responsible for 25 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart and Rolling Stone has ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all time.
We have his memories, his photographs, his statues and his songs. We have the love he tried to inject and the tears.
Here is one of the tracks from his profound musical and literary sensibility.
Jim Morrison (December 8, 1943 - July 3, 1971):
The self-proclaimed 'King of Orgasmic rock' or call him the 'The Lizard King'.
It was 1965 when a film undergraduate formed a band called The Doors, with fellow student Ray Manzarek and local L.A. musicians John Densmore and Robby Krieger.
Jim Morrison was the frontman, an American singer-songwriter and a poet. His wild personality and performances made him of the most iconic, charismatic, and revolutionary frontmen in rock music history.
The counterculture of 1960s was considered to be entrenched with The Doors and of course Morrison's celebrity image.
The critics talk endlessly about his image, his being wild and insane but I have nothing to do with all this. It's a day when an influential singer-songwriter was born.
The music which Morrison made makes people high. You don't need beer when you have his music. The vocals and the guitar riffs are just enough.
The 1967 release of The Doors was the first in a series of top ten albums in the US, followed by Strange Days (1967), Waiting for the Sun (1968), The Soft Parade (1969), Morrison Hotel (1970), Absolutely Live (1970) and L.A. Woman (1971), with 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. The Doors were the first American band to accumulate eight consecutive gold LPs.
Morrison was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone's list of the '100 Greatest Singers of All Time' and number 22 on Classic Rock Magazine's '50 Greatest Singers In Rock'.
Although Jim Morrison has died but his popularity still persists. Morrison's quest for music ended in an overdose after alcholism had wrecked his bloated body on July 3, 1971.
I am sure the musical force would still be riding on the storm if he were alive. And there would have been no End.
'The End' from The Doors.
The 31 year old pop star Nicki Minaj was also born on the same day, December 8. The lady celebrated her birthday in L.A with Safaree, Lil Twist and Kylie Jenner.
The birthday was of course crammed with cakes and it was definitely was a sight to be seen with two astounding ones - one shaped like breasts and another that said, "Happy birthday to the most talented woman on this planet."
The country pop star Taylor Swift celebrated her 24th Birthday on 13th December with her regular gal pals in Melbourne. Taylor shared photos on Instagram from the event that had a garden party theme and captioned one of the pictures as "The best birthday I've ever had".
The home is full of experiments, the music is meeting art in Dewarists, the Bollywood movie music is out, the fusion of the folk and pop and mix by DJ's.
However, singer and actor Zubin Mehta calls it a disgrace that there is no concert hall in Delhi even for Indian music.
The new music from Bollywood this week are the songs from movies -
What the Fish
Mr. Joe Carvalho
The signature tune of Dhoom is reinvented in its sequel Dhoom 3. The new tune appears more enjoying then the previous one.
The lead track 'Malang' from 'Dhoom 3' stands out of the album and is not just a love song but also has a tatse of sufi. The singers sing on a high throated voice that makes the song more interesting.
However the Jukebox is still trending with the songs released earlier. And the new movies fail to compose songs to grab the attention and hold the listeners.
Personally, I find the music in Dewarists far more soothing and melodic than the songs popping out from Bollywood. The music meets art, as the Dewaists say.
Two videos on Dewarists this week are the promo video of The Dewarists Season 3 - 'The Journey' promo and 'Khwaamakhaah'.
The sixth episode on The Dewarists, this year, looks back upon the collaborations where music and art met to create a multi-sensorial experience.
Monica Dogra, takes through the diverse locales where each artist worked to create art that inspire all those who come into it forays. They go through the hearts and minds of collaborators to understand the sacrifice and love for their art; and how living true to their passion, keeps them going.
Jayachandran Palazhy, founder of the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts and his dance troupe are joined by Delhi based hind-rock band Euphoria for the fifth collaboration of senses on The Dewarists. Set by the tranquil shores of Pondicherry, the collaboration fuses contemporary movement arts with the effortless energy of Euphoria.
The Vocals-Guitar, Stethoscope and the Keyboard will take you into a world of life leaving a soft smile on your lips.
The liquid voice of Palash and the South Indian vocals are brilliantly mixed.
Another event in the world of Indian music is the India Tour of sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar. The event is scheduled in Talkatora Stadium on December 14. Anoushka will be singing the tracks from her latest album 'Traces of You.' The album also features Norah Jones.
The album is a brilliant mix of Indian music with English vocals. Here is the title track of album. Enjoy!
The Local Train!
The Delhi-Chandigarh based Hindi rock band 'The Local Train' is now all set to launch their debut album in December. And for them this week was hectic and happening too, as they finished the edit of their debut album.
The video is one of a kind as they shot it live with thousands of fans banging their heads and screaming their lungs out. This is first time that any independent band is coming up with such a music video.
And now the band is planning to shoot a lot of their live shows to showcase the madness that occurs at their gigs!
Something like this!
Stay tuned until the next week. Cheers!
