Oxford librarian sacked over 'Harlem Shake' video
An Oxford University librarian has been sacked after a recording of Harlem Shake went viral on YouTube.
London: An Oxford University librarian has been sacked and a number of students fined after a recording of dance track - the Harlem Shake - filmed in the university premises, went viral on YouTube.
The 30-second long video clip, has had more than 5,000 views, and sparked outrage among senior staff members of the 120-year-old Oxford University College. All the students who had been identified as taking part in the video have been fined by the Dean and a librarian and graduate student, Calypso Nash, sacked for not preventing the Harlem Shake taking place, The Telegraph reported.
In the video, a group of around 30 students are seen studying in the tranquil surroundings of St Hilda's College library while a student wearing an American football helmet dances in the aisle.
Then the film cuts to all the students doing the Harlem Shake craze in fancy dress. One was dressed as a member of the jailed Russian pop group Pussy Riot, while another wore a horse's head. There were also students dressed as weight lifters, a skier and wearing a furry badger costume. Some danced in the library
aisles, while others stood on chairs and on tables.
Students have called for the reinstatement of the librarian and Nash, who just happened to be at the library at the time rather than taking part. Students are also calling for the fines to be rescinded as they shot the video late on a Sunday night as not to disturb anyone studying. The whole event was over in seven minutes, a student representative said.
The Harlem Shake is an Internet dance craze in which a group of people perform a comedy sketch accompanied by a short excerpt from the song "Harlem Shake".
The video became viral in early February 2013, with thousands of "Harlem Shake" videos being uploaded on YouTube.
