Lucknow: Following the footsteps of two Samajwadi Party MLCs who resigned last week, another Legislative Council member, Sarojni Agarwal resigned on Friday. She immediately joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with UP cabinet minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi by her side.

The third such resignation in quick succession comes as a huge blow for former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who came down heavily on BJP and its President Amit Shah last week.

Bukkal Nawab and Yashwant Singh had resigned moments after Shah’s flight reached Lucknow’s Amausi Airport on Saturday.

“The BJP is behind the resignation of Samajwadi Party MLCs. Bukkal Nawab is an old member of our party. I even met him on Eid. What is the reason that he has changed all of a sudden? These are a lot of members who reached the House ahead of time. They do it on purpose; so they can lure some MLCs to their side,” Yadav said on Saturday.

The resignations now pave the way for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and deputy CMs Keshav Maurya and Dinesh Sharma to enter the Legislative Council. None of the three are members of either House in the state.

Born in Bulandshahar, Agarwal became an MLC for the first time in 2009 and is a doctor by profession.
