Buddhadeb resigns as CM of West Bengal
The West Bengal Chief Minister resigned following the Left Front's massive loss in the Assembly polls.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has resigned on Friday following the debacle suffered by the CPM-led ruling Left Front in the Assembly polls.

Bhattacharjee was the chief minister of the state for two consecutive terms since May, 2001, taking over the baton from party patriarch Jyoti Basu who was at the helm of affairs in the state since 1977.

Meanwhile, the CPM state secretariat met here to review the severe drubbing in the election suffered by the party-led Front which ruled the state uninterruptedly since 1977.

All the 17 secretariat members were present at the meeting which was presided over by party's state secretary Biman Bose and attended by the chief minister.

The 10-party Left Front is also scheduled to meet.

Governor accepts CM's resignation

West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his council of ministers.

The Governor requested the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues to continue in office until alternative arrangements were made.

Bhattacharjee called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan on Friday afternoon and tendered his resignation following telecasting of Assembly election results on the electronic media, a Raj Bhavan press statement said.
