Hyderabad: The Election Commission has issued show cause notice to YSR Congress Party president, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for violating Model Code of Conduct during a byelection in the state.

Reddy has been asked by the EC to explain as to why action should not be initiated against him. He has been given 48 hours to respond.

The notice was issued after nodal officer who inquired into the incident submitted a report, with video evidence, stating Reddy used provocative and objectionable language against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu.

The officer found that Reddy made objectionable statements like, "If Chandrababu Naidu is shot in middle of road for his misdeeds, there is nothing wrong" and "should he be called a thief or Chief Minister".

The returning officer of the Nandyal constituency byelection had received a complaint on August 4 that during election campaign speech on August 3rd, Reddy made an objectionable and provocative speech, after which an inquiry was initiated in the incident.

According to the EC, provocative and inflammatory statements calculated to cause mutual hatred or disharmony, use of abusive language transgressing the limits of decency, and/ or an attack on personal character is in violation of model code of conduct.
