Trivandrum: The exclusion of Kerala athlete P.U. Chitra from the Indian squad for World Athletics Championships has kicked off a storm. Chitra told News18 that she will be moving High Court after she and other athletes were not included in the squad.

The decision was taken by a panel of Athletics Federation of India, which had other Kerala athletes like PT Usha on board. Chitra, who won the 1,500m gold in the recent Asian Championships, is eligible to compete as an Asian champion, but AFI claims she her timing is below world standards.

Chitra told News18, “I was preparing for the championships and was training at Ooty. I was mentally and physically prepared to compete. I am very disappointed over the body’s decision.”

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier in the day come out in support of Chitra. He had called Chitra’s exclusion ‘unacceptable’, and said he would exert pressure on the Sports Ministry to get her included in the squad. Sports Authority of India has meanwhile sought an explanation from AFI over Chitra’s exclusion.

World Athletics Championships are to be held in London from August 4 to 13.
