European leaders pleaded with politicians in Italy to quickly form a govt to lower Italy's critically high debt.
The centre-left coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani won the lower house by around 125,000 votes.
The voting in Italian polls finished on Monday. As counting is on, indications are that none of the two alliances will be able to form a govt.
Mario Monti was appointed to lead an unelected government to save Italy from financial crisis in 2011.
