Initially the film was set up with Universal but fell through due to problems with the scripts and the budget.
Renner was later reported as no longer being attached to the film and there were rumors that James Franco was considered for the role but eventually Joaquin Phoenix was officially cast in the role.

Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead composed the background score for the film. This is the second time Greenwood has scored an Anderson film, the first being 'There Will Be Blood'.
