Moana is a 3D animated fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film.
The film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and features music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film features the voices of Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk.
It follows the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of the chief of a Polynesian tribe, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in hopes to save her people.
The word Moana is the Polynesian word for ocean or sea. It is also a common Polynesian word for the colour blue.
Auli'i Cravalho is the youngest Disney Princess voice ever, being only 14 years old (16 by the time the film came out).
Moana is the second Disney Princess to have a story not based on a fairy tale or legend, nor having a love interest. The first one was Merida from Brave (2012), four years prior.
It is the first Polynesian-themed Disney animated feature film since Lilo & Stitch
