In the 2019 Odisha Assembly elections, Gunupur , recorded a voter turnout of 71.07%. The voter turnout in the 2014 Assembly elections was 73.89% and in 2009, 60.41% of Gunupur 's voters came out to elect their Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA).
In the 2014 Odisha state Assembly elections, Trinath Gomango of BJD won in this seat defeating INC's candidate by a margin of 7,386 votes which was 5.16% of the total votes polled. Trinath Gomango polled a total of 1,43,079 (38.62%) votes.
BJD's Ramamurty Mutika won this seat in the 2009 Odisha Assembly elections beating the ADMK candidate by a margin of 18749 (17.37%) votes. Ramamurty Mutika polled 1,07,934 which was 38.62% of the total votes polled.
