The Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party has tied up with Jayant Chaudhary’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) this time to challenge the BJP. Yadav began a state-wide Padyatra before the Election Commission banned physical rallies. Akhilesh Yadav will contest from Karhal, his first Assembly election test. Joining forces with the RLD, the SP hopes to tap into farmers’ and Jat vote bank after the farmers’ protest, in addition to its traditional Muslim and Yadav support base. The SP had won 47 seats in the 403-seat Assembly in 2017.
In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, SP contested in 311 out of 403 seats, winning 47 seats with 21.82% of the total votes cast. In 2012, SP contested in 401 out of 403 seats, winning 224 seats with 29.13% of the total votes cast. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, SP contested in 37 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh winning 5. In 2014, SP contested in 78 out of 80 Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh winning 5.
