The Israel-Palestine crisis is once again at the center of world attention and the suspects are the usual: Israel blames Iran for arming Hamas and Palestine blames Israel for worsening the crisis and that Israel's ruling party was never interested in peace. The Palestinian ambassador also hinted at the usual American backing for Israel.

It's been more than half a century since Israel was created out of British Palestine. It immediately gained recognition from the United Nations and the United States. Overtime, Israel's economic influence has majorly increased around the world. It's defense force is no less to be amongst the best in the world. But Palestine is still struggling for a statehood status from the UN and its economy runs mainly on financial aids. Even during this crisis, which reportedly began with the killing of a Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari on Nov 14th, President Obama reached out to both sides for peace but said Israel has the 'right to defend itself'. The Palestinian ambassador to India responded by saying 'everybody has the right to defend himself. Even Palestine has the right. But how they (Israel) defend? by killing women, children.' It is understandable when Palestine says this. The casualties on both sides are simply unmatched. Israel's perceived threat that 4.5 million Israeli citizens fall in the range of Hamas rockets from the southern part of the country also doesn't seem to hit a chord.

But Israel's argument of ending the root cause of the conflict does hold value. Israel has prospered and moved way ahead of the country it emerged from in 1948. A long-term settlement is as necessary for them as it is for the Palestinians who crave for the violence to end. The only question now is who is gaining out of this crisis: the Israelis, who are still struggling to retain their Promised Land, the Arabs and the Persians who can never stand together, or the huge arms lobby sitting far away from the borders of the two warring countries.
