My name is Deblina Banerjee. I have done my B.E. in Information Technology from Mumbai University and then after having worked for an IT firm for a few months, currently I'm pursuing a M.B.A. from MET League of Colleges.

I have always had a keen interest in politics but until now my sources have been newspapers, news channels and discussions with friends and Always I have just heard everybody abusing the politicians, the government, etc. And these were the same people who would take the next flight to the U.S. or the U.K. while at least our politicians would get their hands dirtied here.

We live in big cities with big houses but our politicians are the ones who work at the grass root level and reach out to those people whose existence is unknown to us. I agree there are politicians who are corrupt and who are just stacking up bundles of notes in their houses. But what do we do about them? Just sit and crib.

Until now it had been a common belief among people that politics is dirty and it is not something for the educated and decent people like us. But now with politicians like Sachin Pilot, Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, etc in our Parliament the scenario is changing fast. Politicians like them have proved that there is a place for educated people in the government.

Another common belief was that a person has to be from a political background to be a part of politics. Common people like us lacked a platform to enter politics. But now with Rahul Gandhi being the new face of youth politics has encouraged and given tickets to many educated people to contest elections. The Youth Congress drive which took place recently in Mumbai has allowed common people like me and my friends to join politics.

Also now all the positions in the Youth Congress are on election basis and not selection basis, thus allowing people like you and me also to contest elections. It will also provide all its members with an ID card making the process highly systematic. This has encouraged educated and young people like us to be a part of the government and bring about those changes which we had been just discussing for so long. Today we have got the opportunity to enter politics so I hope more and more people like us become a part of this change.

Why I joined the IYC?

I had a general interest in politics all this time. And all I did about it was read newspapers and watch news channels. Never did it occur to me that I could also be a part of it. But educated, young and progressive politicians like Sachin Pilot, Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, etc. have inspired me a lot to be a part of politics through their ideas and work.

Then I heard about the IYC membership drive which allowed anybody like me to join politics. This drive has not allowed me to become a member of Congress and work for them but contest elections also. Such transparency and systematic way of working has encouraged me to enter politics.
