9th January 1996: Shaun Pollock Wins MOTM on His ODI Debut Against England

On this day in 1996, South African fast bowling legend Shaun Pollock made his ODI debut in Cape Town against England in the seven-match ODI series.

In fact, Pollock was declared the man of the match for his performances with both bat and ball, as world cricket sat up and took notice of the potential he had. Walking in to bat with his team in a precarious position at 107/6, Pollock smashed a run-a-ball 66 to take his team to the respectable score of 211/8 in 50 overs.

He then took 4/34, taking the wickets of Neil Fairbrother, Craig White, Neil Smith and Darren Gough to take his side to victory by five runs. England would go on to lose the series 6-1, and Pollock had a big part to play in delivering the first blow of the series to the away side.

In what was a glittering ODI career, Pollock made 302 more appearances for his country, taking 393 wickets. He also scored 3519 runs at an average of 26.4, to end his career as one of ODI cricket’s all-time great all-rounders.

Pollock was also his country’s highest Test wicket taker with 421 wickets, until Dale Steyn recently overtook him in South Africa’s last Test series against Pakistan at home.
