South African skipper AB de Villiers smashed the fastest ever one-day international century in 31 balls in the second ODI against the West Indies at The Wanderers on Sunday.
After coming to the wicket following a massive 247-run opening stand between Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw, De Villiers compounded the tourist’ misery as he belted eight fours and 11 massive sixes to beat the previous record of 36 balls by New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson, also against West Indies, last year.
In the process, he also broke the record of fastest ODI fifty set by Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya against Pakistan in 1996, who scored it in 17 balls. De Villiers bettered the record by a ball, scoring his in 16.
De Villiers innings finally came to an end in the last over of the innings. He scored a magnificent 149 runs from just 44 balls, including record-equalling 16 sixes besides 9 fours.
The hosts’ innings of 439 for 2 also became the first instance of three batsmen scoring a century in an ODI innings, with openers Riley Roussow and Hashim Amla scoring 128 and 153, other than De Villiers’ whirlwind century.
The South African innings fell just five runs short of the highest ODI innings of 444.
