It’s been 16 years since former South Africa captain Hansie Cronje died in a plane crash, but he is still remembered by his old teammate and fast bowler Allan Donald.

Even though Cronje was handed a life ban due to his involvement in match-fixing, Donald still has fond memories of his "brother". In an emotional post on Cronje's death anniversary, Donald wrote, "16 years ago you left us my brother. Every time when this day comes along I think about you and the times we had together as kids playing backyard cricket and rugby test matches. Missing you always Hansie you will never be forgotten. RIP.”

Even pacer Dale Steyn remembered Cronje. In a post on social media, Steyn called Cronje his “hero”. He wrote, “I’m 2 years older than Hansie was when he passed, but I’ll forever remember him through the eyes of my 11 year old self. Regardless of his mistakes, he was my then hero, he helped pave my direction to where I am today.”

In a career spanning eight years, Cronje played 188 ODIs and 68 tests. He last appeared in an international game against Pakistan in 2000.
