Bagshot: England rugby coach Eddie Jones advised Australia spinner Nathan Lyon to work on an "arm ball" after watching him go wicket-less on the first day of the Ashes series.

Lyon finished England's first innings with tidy figures of two for 78, but Jones, once a club-level spin bowler, said his fellow Australian could do with another weapon in his armoury.

"I watched that 'Garry' Lyon bowl, he needs an arm ball mate, I thought he needs an arm ball," he said, in response to a question from AFP after the opening day of the first Test on Thursday.

Lyon, nicknamed "Garry" in honour of the former Australia Rules footballer turned broadcaster Garry Lyon, took none for 40 in 24 overs on day one, but removed Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes as England collapsed on the second day.

An arm ball is generally quicker and straighter than an off-spinner's stock delivery, and often deceives batsmen expecting a standard off-break.

Jones, who took Australia to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, is a keen follower of cricket and often refers to the summer game when addressing media.
