Asia Cup 2016, Qualifier 1: Rohan Mustafa stars as UAE stun Afghanistan by 16 runs

Riding on Rohan Mustafa's all-round show, United Arab Emirates (UAE) stunned Afghanistan by 16 runs in the inaugural game of the Asia Cup Twenty20 (T20) qualifiers on Friday.

Coming on to bat after winning the toss, opener Mustafa scored a splendid knock of 77 runs and later chipped in with three wickets to guide his team home.

The UAE, with only three players having the combined experience of over 10 T20Is, carried out an impressive job of maintaining their composure throughout the game.

The UAE openers registered their highest partnership in T20Is as they put up an opening stand of 83 and overhauled their previous best of 67 runs.

Mustafa (77 off 50), who now holds the record for highest individual score for UAE in T20s surpassing Amjad Javed's tally of 76 runs, hit seven boundaries and four sixes in his knock to guide UAE to a respectable 176 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Afghanistan couldn’t manage to stage a strong chase and were bundled out for 160.

Farhan Ahmed and Mohammad Naveed got the early breakthroughs as they sent Afghanistan openers Mohammad Shahzad (6) and Usman Ghani (3) back cheaply inside three overs.

For Afghanistan, Karim Sadiq played a sedate knock of 72 runs and gave some hope to the team.

But his wicket in the 19th over turned the game in UAE's favour.

Mustafa the demolished Afghanistan tail and powered UAE home in 19.5 overs.
