Asia Cup Qualifying: Shahzad, Usman shine as UAE edge past Hong Kong

Mohammad Shahzad 52 (39b, 4X4, 1X6) and Muhammad Usman 41 (39b, 6X4) played pivotal innings and knitted 79 runs for third wicket to help the United Arab Emirates beat Hong Kong by six wickets and won the second successive match at the Asia Cup Qualifying in Fatullah, Bangladesh, on Sunday.

UAE lost Shahzad in closing stages, but Shaiman Anwar 25 runs not out (22b, 2X4, 1X6) and skipper Amjad Javed, who blasted a six off the only ball he faced in his unbeaten innings, helped the team chase down victory target of 147 with nine balls to spare. From Hong Kong, Nadeem Ahmed, Tanwir Afzal, MS Chapman and Aizaz Khan took a wicket each.

Earlier, Hong Kong saw both their openers Anshuman Rath (10)and KD Shah (0) returning to pavilion with just 26 runs on the board, but Babar Hayat 54 (45b, 8X4), and Chapman 29 (25b, 3X4, 1X6) and Nizakat Khan 28 (18b, 1X4, 2X6) played some responsible innings in the middle order to resurrect the team.

However, quick dismissals or Babar and Tanwir 7 (7b) in 16th and 17th overs, put a brake of Hong Kong’s run speed as the team gathered just 24 runs in last five overs. Their total of 146 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs was still a fighting score. From UAE, Mohammad Naveed (3 for 14) and Javed (2 for 21) were the highest wicket-takers.

Hong Kong seemed to be on the right track for their second successive win when they sent UAE openers Rohan Mustafa 10 (6b, 1X4, 1X6) and Muhammad Kaleem 4 (8b, 1X4) back to pavilion, but Shahzad and Usman pulled UAE off dangerous situation with their attacking innings. Usman was out when the team’s score was 101 in 13.1 overs, but the new man Anwar ensured that the run flow doesn’t get disturbed as he ably supported Shahzad. Shahzad got out when UAE needed just six runs to win. Javed took the team home with a six off his first delivery.
