Boyd Rankin becomes eighth multi-nation ODI player

Dublin: When he donned the England jersey on Tuesday in front of his home fans in Dublin, former Ireland fast bowler Boyd Rankin became the eighth player in the history of ODI cricket to represent two countries. Having earlier made his Twenty20 international debut for England in June, Rankin was handed his first ODI cap for his adopted country when the two teams met in Cardiff for a one-off ODI.

Those before him are Kepler Wessels (Australia/South Africa), Clayton Lambert (West Indies/USA), Anderson Cummins (West Indies/Canada), Dougie Brown (England/Scotland), Ed Joyce (England/Ireland), Eoin Morgan (Ireland/England) and Luke Ronchi (Australia/New Zealand).

Rankin, 29, played 37 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Ireland but retired from Irish cricket towards the end of 2012 in order to concentrate on winning a place in the England Test side. The 6ft 7in fast bowler made his England Lions debut in 2011 against Sri Lanka A and was selected on the England Performance Programme later that same year.

His former Ireland team-mates Joyce and Morgan also played for two countries. The last player to have represented two counties was Ronchi, the former Australia wicketkeeper who switched to New Zealand. Ronchi made his New Zealand debut in 2013 too.
