In the pre-match press conference, MS Dhoni said that the Chennai fans had waited for a long time to see their team play. “The emotional aspect was more at the start of the tournament. Once the tournament starts, you have to be more professional than emotional about it. Yes, we are a bit disappointed that we couldn’t play matches in Chennai, but at the same time, we are still happy that we at least one game happened in Chennai because the fans were waiting for a long time for this moment,” he said.
“The last two years we were not there but our fan following kept increasing, the fans were waiting for us to come back and start doing well. It’s unfortunate that we are not playing in Chennai, but as I said, being professional is more important,” said Dhoni.
The Chennai Super Kings side led by the former India captain Dhoni were away from the IPL after they had been suspended for two years following the spot-fixing and betting scandal that rocked the tournament in 2013.
The 2018 IPL saw them return to the competition after the two year break. The CSK franchise were able to play only one game in Chennai, when they face the Kolkata Knight Riders and beat them by five wickets in a high scoring contest on April 10th.
