After landing in hot waters for comparing Indian Premier League to the likes of PSL and LPL, South African bowler Dale Steyn is once again being targeted by Indian cricket fans for his IPL opinions. Steyn made his IPL debut during the very first season of the series in 2008 and has played for four different teams in his decade-long run in the league. He has played for Deccan Chargers (now defunct), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

On March 19, Steyn opened up his Twitter for a short Q&A session with the fans as he waited for breakfast. Though the cricketer is sitting back for IPL 2021, a fan still asked him about his favourite IPL team. His response was, “All teams, but Mumbai seem to have a solid thing going. QDK [Quentin de Kock] also one of my favorite players so always support him too.”

Steyn had expressed admiration for his South African teammate de Kock on multiple occasions so his support for the player from his country wasn’t surprising.

But the response, though completely innocent, irked a lot of fans. Many resorted to calling Steyn a “snake” as he did not choose any of his former teams as his favourite or showcased any support for his former teammates. RCB fans were especially inflamed and called him traitor.

Steyn was already in the bad books of many Indian IPL fans when he stated that playing in leagues like PSL and LPL was more fulfilling and rewarding. He suggested that Indian league is more about the money offered to a player. “I found that playing in these other leagues was slightly more rewarding as a player,” he said according to Cricktracker. According to him, IPL hassuch big squads and so many big names and so much emphasis on maybe the amount of money players earn and much more extravagance, that cricket gets forgotten somewhere down the line.

But the Indian fans attacked his Twitter, calling him traitorous and coloured abuses, and he later issued an apology.
