Hope Pant Has Some Runs Left In Him For The IPL: Ricky Ponting

The head coach of Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting hopes that the star batsman of the franchise Rishabh Pant has some runs left in him after a string of brilliant performances in back to back series against Australia and England. Pant has been in scintillating form with the bat in Test cricket with his majestic hundred leading India’s fightback in Ahmedabad. He had produced a couple of sensational performances Down Under coming up with the goods against all odds in tough conditions against one of the best bowling attacks in the world.

Ponting took to Twitter on Monday and expressed his eagerness to join the Delhi Capitals’ camp ahead of the 14th edition of the IPL, which gets underway in India from the 9th of April. The former Australian captain and international great also wished that R Ashwin and Axar Patel had some tricks left up their sleeve after their brilliant performance against England in the four-Test series.

Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker of the series with 32 wickets at a stunning average of 14.71. He became the first Indian bowler to bag 30 or more wickets in a series twice in his career. Axar Patel returned with 27 wickets in just three Tests in what was his debut series. He equaled the record of Dilip Doshi for the maximum number of wickets by an Indian bowler in his debut Test series. Both Ashwin and Patel represent the Delhi Capitals which has one of the most potent and balanced squads in the upcoming IPL.

“Can’t wait to get over to Delhi Capitals and get to work. Hope Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin have some wickets left after taking all of them in the last month, and Rishabh Pant has more runs to make, ” stated Ponting.

Pant saw the humour in Ponting’s message and replied saying, “Hahhahaha waiting for you Rick”.

The swashbuckling Indian wicket-keeper batsman did not have a great season in the IPL last year in UAE. He had an aggregate of 343 runs in 14 matches at an average of 31.18 but at a poor strike rate of 113.95 – his destructive prowess which defines his batting was missing in the tournament.

Ponting and Delhi Capitals would be looking for a big performance from Pant in the 2021 season. Going by the left-hander’s recent form for India in Test cricket, something special might well be in store in the IPL this year.
