ICL's Pak players still hopeful of recall

Some Pak players are selling their wares in India for a different cause.

Chandigarh: Pakistan have returned home after a dismal defeat to India, but there are some Pakistani cricketers who are still around; those who are playing in the rebel Indian Cricket League.

For Shoaib Malik, it couldn't have got any worse. Reputed to be the team of cornered tigers, Malik's team itself has been cornered and cowering. Barring a brief blaze of brilliance at the Twenty20 World Championships, they have barely managed a snarl.

While many from this forlorn outfit might still be needing medical attention, it would perhaps do the PCB a world of good if it turns its attention to some of the same breed who are selling their wares in India for a different cause.

"I've always looked forward to play for my country, and I continue to do so. And I'm always available to them whenever they need me. My dream remains to continue to play for Pakistan," former Pakistan opener Taufeeq Umar, who is playing for Delhi Jets in the Indian Cricket League, says.

Pakistan cricket has always responded to strong leaders. But with Malik bereft of the fire, purpose and intensity that comes with his job, his men were reduced to shrinking violets, confounded by the mess they created themselves. Maybe, the selectors do need to look beyond their talent pool.

"After Inzamam's retirement, the batting line-up has not performed up to the mark. Misbah has definitely been a revelation, but Inzamam's absence is still carrying its weight around the team," adds former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.

And though Misbah-ul-Haq seemed like a silver lining in the carnage, the bizarre goings-on in Pakistan cricket must be done away with soon if they are to prevent self-extinction.
