It looked like India’s failure to clean up the lower order was once again going to haunt them as Australia captain Tim Paine and Pat Cummins stitched a 59-run partnership for the seventh wicket at the start of day two.

There was not much assistance for the bowlers in the initial overs of the morning session, with Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma failing to trouble Paine or Cummins. Jasprit Bumrah had a repeat of day one, bowling sensationally, beating the bat on multiple occasions but failing to find the edge.

Paine and Cummins threatened to take the home side close to 350 but Umesh Yadav produced an unplayable delivery, full and moving away in the final moments to hit Cummins’ off stump.

The very next over, Paine was trapped in front by Bumrah and then Ishant took the remaining two wickets in consecutive deliveries three overs later, dismissing Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood caught behind.

Ishant finished with 4 for 41 while Jasprit Bumrah finished with 2 for 51 in the innings .

Earlier on the opening day of the match, Paine elected to bat first on a green-looking wicket. But Australia's top-order fired with Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch and Travis Head scoring half-centuries to give Australia an edge. The hosts had finished day one at 277 for 6.
