India were bowled out for 283 with Lyon ending with figures of 5 for 67, while Kohli top-scored with 123 for India.
The game was in the balance when the day started with India on 172/3. They had two set batsmen in Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, but Lyon had the latter caught behind in the fourth ball of the day to set the tone.
Kohli crossed his century, with a steady Hanuma Vihari for company. The two added 50 for the fifth wicket to steady the ship again, with Kohli reaching his milestone driving Mitchell Starc to the mid-off boundary. He even slashed Josh Hazlewood over third man for six, but the bowler ended the stand when he had Vihari nicking behind.
A lot then depended on Kohli, but he didn't last much longer. Cummins had him driving and edging to second slip, where Peter Handscomb took a low catch. Kohli stood his ground, but the third umpire didn't find much evidence to overrule the on-field soft signal.
At 251 for 6, with a long tail to come, India were in trouble. Lyon didn't take much time to run through the lower order. Mohammed Shami nicked behind to fall for a first-ball duck and Ishant Sharma handed a return catch. Pant slogged a few to and over the boundary ropes, but perished in similar fashion when he mishit Lyon to long-on for 36 .
Bumrah then nicked to first slip to hand Lyon yet another five-wicket haul.
