India vs Australia: Starc Not at his Best But Perth Track Will Suit Him – Mark Waugh

With the Perth Test around the corner and the series against India potentially on the line, it is hard to see the Australian cricket team team making changes to their fearsome bowling unit.

However, former Australian cricketer and national selector Mark Waugh told told Big Sports Breakfast that he believes Mitchell Starc is fighting to keep his spot in the side and Perth could be the acid test.

Waugh, who is also commentating with Fox Sports, said that the fast bowler has not been at his best for quite a while.

“He hasn’t bowled at his best probably the last 12 months,” Waugh said. "He’s just been a little bit off with his consistency and line and length.

“But he’s that sort of bowler who’s a bit of an enigma. He bowls some bad balls and then he’ll bowl you a cracking delivery. I’d just love to see him a bit more consistent with the new ball.”

Starc took five wickets in Adelaide in the first Test defeat to India but was subjected to a lot of criticism from retired Australia cricketers.

Former captain Mark Taylor labelled his efforts “ordinary”, Allan Border and Damien Fleming questioned his action while Mitchell Johnson lamented his body language.

However, Waugh does believes that Starc will be back to his best at Perth, which according to reports earlier in the week, was going to offer plenty of pace and bounce.

But should he struggle again, Waugh said selectors may be left with a difficult decision for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

“Perth’s really going to suit him. He’s going to bowl quick there and get a lot of bounce.”

“If he’s probably not up to scratch in Perth I think they might think about making some changes for the rest of the series,” he said.

The second Test between India and Australia gets underway at Perth on Friday (December 14).
