Cheteshwar Pujara’s magnificent 123 helped India recover after Australia had them reeling at 41 for 4 at one stage to end Day 1 of the first Test at Adelaide with 250 for 9 on the board. Pujara was run out on what was eventually the last ball of the day but not before his maiden Test ton in Australia had everyone singing his praise on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, India batted first after winning the toss and would have hoped to make it count but lost both their openers very early in the piece with only 15 runs on the board.

And things went from bad to worse when Indian captain Virat Kohli was snapped by an excellent grab by Usman Khawaja at gully off the bowling of Pat Cummins. He departed for 3, leaving India in trouble at 19 for 3.

The vice-captain of the side, Ajinkya Rahane talked about converting his starts before the Test but was guilty of throwing a one away in the first innings.

Even Dravid’s wishes weren’t enough for Rahane to make a score.

Rohit Sharma, as usual, looked at ease on his comeback to the Test side. A short in particular, a loft off the bowling of Cummins was pleasing to the eyes and had everyone gasping.

But as has been the case with him, Rohit fell trying to hit Lyon for sixes off consecutive balls, much to the despair of his fans and cricket experts.

Rishabh Pant came in, played and missed at quite a few before going into a defensive shell. It was a day where most of the Indian batsmen barring Pujara, failed to find the right tempo for their innings.

It was the 62-run stand between Ravichandran Ashwin and Pujara for the seventh wicket that got India to a respectable total. Cummins though returned late in the day to dismiss the break the stand and provided Australia with an opening.

Pujara went onto register his 16th Test ton, third against Australia and ensured that India were not out of the game on the first day itself.
