There has been a lot of debate over the pitch in Motera Stadiumwhere India registered a memorable win against England. Many former cricketers have called the pitch in Ahmedabad unfit for a Test match. Their comments came after the third Test ended in just two days. Now, former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has also waded into the controversy. The legendary cricketer believes that it was not the pitch but the lack of batting technique that led to England’s downfall.
Gavaskar told The Indian Expressthat the pitch was indeed behaving in a true manner, and there was no invariable bounce. He mentioned that the pitch supported spin, however, the”batsmen should be able to handle the turn or the straighter ones.”
Gavaskar, one of the true greats of Test cricket, buttressed his point by talking about Rohit Sharma’s batting in Ahmedabad. “Rohit Sharma’s batting in both innings showed you could score runs on this pitch,” he added.
Sharma, in the first innings, managed to score 66 runs from 96 balls and in the second innings, he and Shubman Gill comfortably scored 49 runs for the win. In the second half, Sharma scored 25 runs from 25 balls, while Gill managed 15 runs from 21 balls. England were all out for 112. In the match, Axar Patel picked up six wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin completed taking 400 test wickets in his career. Further, the match was also special for Ishant Sharma as it was his 100th Test.
Many Indian cricketers including master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Irfan Pathan, Yuvraj Singh, Kuldeep Yadav andShikhar Dhawanhad congratulated the team India on the big win.
