Cricketnext Staff | Updated: August 4, 2017, 6:05 PM IST

2nd Test, Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo 03 - 07 August, 2018

Toss won by India (decided to bat)

India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs

Man of the Match: Ravindra Jadeja

Its the end of the day, and it has completely belonged to India. They would have wanted more than 600 runs and than a couple of early wickets, Ashwin has done just that with a two wickets. It will be a long way back for Sri Lanka from here now, they need a captain's knock from Chandimal. Their approach should be taking it session by session, with the first target being avoiding the follow on, reaching 422 runs! Do join us tomorrow morning for the day's action.

Last over of the day now,and Ashwin will get one last chance to add another wicket to his kitty. He has been unplayable on this pitch today.

Dinesh Chandimal trying to slow down the game a bit, not letting Jadeja rushing through the overs. Lets see how successful this is as a tactic from him, 3 overs left in the day for now.

Here is an intresting fact for you: Ajinkya Rahane has now taken 18 catches off R Ashwin’s bowling in Tests, the most catches taken by any fielder off Ashwin’s bowling.

Jadeja not troubling the batsmen as much as Ashwin, he is bowling slightly quicker through the air and not giving it as much flight. Ashwin clearly the more dangerous bowler at the moment.

WICKET! It was only a matter of time, Ashwin gets one to take the edge. Karunaratne had to play at that one, gets an outside edge and Rahane takes a simple catch at slip. Second wicket down for the hosts, this looks like another long match for them. Karunaratne dismissed for 25.

Ashwin and Jadeja going rather quickly through the overs, must be wonderful for Kohli to have two bowlers who can rush through their overs. Only seven overs left in the day now, can India get another breakthrough?

REVIEW! Jadejabowls one that carries on with the arm and hits the pad, but umpire says not out. Kohli consults Saha and goes for the review, it has certainly hit the pad first but the impact is outside off and it is also missing the stumps. That's a terrible review from India!

Mendis getting a boundary in that over from Ashwin, but its not something that should overly worry the bowler. It was more of a heave towards leg side rather than a well played shot, he tried that again but the ball hit his body. The batsman aren't reading the spin here.

Sri Lanka are playing for the stumps here, they might be digging themselves into a bit of a hole here as batsmen are not looking for runs. Playing and missing a lot of balls for now!

Jadeja has come into the attack from other end now, replacing Shami. That is the right decision from captain Kohli as the ball is turning and the pitch has some bite in it for the spinners. And who better to use it than one of the most deadly spinning duo in the last year!

Mohammed Shami getting some odd ball to bounce here, Sri Lankan batsmen are not making this pitch look like a flat batting track here for now. SL need to keep their wickets in hand here, if they are to give any fight.

This will be a difficult phase for the Sri Lankan batsmen, Ashwin is getting turn and bounce from the wicket and almost every delivery is an event. Kohli and India are on the prowl here.

OUT: India have gotten off to a dream start as R Ashwin gets rid of Upul Tharanga for 0 in just the second over of the innings. Ashwin bowled a short delivery and Tharanga hit the ball straight into the hands of KL Rahul who was fielding at short leg. Rahul and Virat then celebrate by doing the 'dab'.

Virat Kohli has straightaway opted for spin from the other end as he has introduced Ravichandran Ashwin in just the second over the innings. Ashwin will bowl in tandem with Shami in the opening stages of the innings.

Mohammed Shami has bowled a brilliant first over where he came firing all cylinders and hitting the deck hard. Dimuth Karunaratne is trying is best to negate the fast pace of Shami by playing defensinve shots.

The Indian players are coming out onto the pitch first and Virat Kohli has assembled the team into a huddle. The Indian skipper is issuing a rallying cry for the team to not take things for granted as the match isn't over yet.

Declare: India have finally decided to declare for the score of 622/9 in 158 overs. Pujara: 133, Rahane: 132, Jadeja: 70*, Saha: 67, Ashwin: 54. Meanwhile, as for the hosts, Rangana Herath starred with a three wicket haul.

Kohli has come out in the balcony and is showing the index finger to Jadeja. Don't know what that means as it could be anything as you have one houur to bat or just one over to bat. We will figure that out soon.

SIX: Jadeja shimmies down the track and hits a flat six off the bowling of Herath over the long off boundary. Fourth six of the innings for the southpaw.

Four and 600: Jadeja plays a late cut off the bowling of Dilruwan and the ball goes away for a boundary towards third man. With that the 600 run mark is also up for India.

OUT: Shami tried his luck one more time but this time he in caught out at the mid-wicket boundary off the bowling of Herath. Shami goes for 19 off just 8 deliveries and it was a short but entertaining innings from the Indian pacer.

SIX and SIX: Shami has no regard for Herath as he hits back to back sixes off the bowling of Rangana Herath. Both times he comes down the track and hits the ball towards the long on boundary. He is just enjoying himself out there.

Four: Mohammed Shami looks like a man on a mission as she straightaway hits a boundary off the bowling of Dilruwan Perera. Shami comes dancing down the track and hits the ball over the bowler's head for a four.

50: Jadeja slams back to back boundaries to notch up his half century. This is Jadeja 8th Test fifty and the sword celebration is out. Jadeja once again shows why he is so crucial for the Indian Test team.

OUT: Saha is deceived by a turning delivery which missed the outside edge of his bat by a whisker. However, the right hander was way out his crease and Dickwella did no mistake is removing the bails to stump Saha. Herath gets his third wicket.

SIX: Saha comes dancing down the track and hits the ball over the mid wicket boundary for a huge six off the bowling of Dhananjaya. First six of the innings for Saha. The intention is now clear that India want to score as many runs as possible in the next hour and then declare.

Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja are now walking out on to the pitch. It seems that India will once again hit the magic number of 600 in the first innings then probably they will declare this innings. As for Sri Lanka, they are just going with the motion at the moment.

Tea: India have scored 553/7 till tea on the second day of the second Test. Saha is batting on 59 while Jadeja is batting on 37. The visitors are in commanding position in the match and will look to bat the entire day today.

Day 1 Round Up:

India's batsmen picked up from where they had left in Galle and piled the misery on Sri Lanka's bowlers as they scored 344/3 on day 1 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground with the duo of Cheteshwar Pujara (128) and Ajinkya Rahane (103) slamming unbeaten centuries.

Cheteshwar Pujara in the company of the impressive Ajinkya Rahane as the duo stitched together a strong partnership to take India into tea at 238/3. Rahane took the attack to the opposition by hitting a few aggressive shots and that led the Lankans to spread the field and the duo took full advantage of that.

Both the batsmen helped themselves to half-centuries and then followed that up by reaching the three-figure mark. While Cheteshwar Pujara slammed his 13th Test century, Rahane scored his ninth Test ton as India went into cruise control.
