Prior to this series, Upul Thranga was handed over the responsibility of the leading Lanka, but failed miserably against Pakistan as his side lost 5-0 in the ODIs and 3-0 in the T20Is. Tharanga, though has done well with the bat this year scoring 800 runs in the ODIs.
Not just performance related issues, but Tharanga had got into trouble due to slow over rates twice, and was later suspended. He had also refused to be a part of the third T20I against Pakistan, that was scheduled to take place in Lahore.
In the ongoing Test series, Sri Lanka trails 1-0, as they suffered a humiliating defeat by an innings and 239 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin was the wrecker-in-chief and claimed eight wickets in the entire match. To go with that, India had four centurions—Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma.
The third and final Test will take place in Delhi, that begins on December 2.
