IPL 2017: All-round Sunrisers Hyderabad Thrash Kings XI Punjab by 26 Runs

New Delhi: A clinical bowling display from Sunrisers Hyderabad saw them beat Kings XI Punjab by 26 runs in their IPL encounter at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Friday. After a stellar show by the likes of Shikhar Dhawan (77), Kane Williamson (54) and David Warner (51) with the bat, it was Siddarth Kaul (3/36) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/27) who sealed the deal with the ball as SRH consolidated their position at the third place in the points table.

Chasing 208 was never going to be easy and with Bhuvneshwar removing the dangerous looking Martin Guptill (23), Ashish Nehra dismissing Manan Vohra for 3 and Kaul sending back Maxwell for a duck in the first 5 overs, it was a lost battle from the word go itself.

But credit must be given to Shaun Marsh for playing a vintage knock which was laced with 14 boundaries and two humongous sixes. Even though he did not find much support from the other end, apart from Eoin Morgan hitting a 21-ball 26, Marsh kept on attacking the bowlers and kept the SRH bowlers and fielders on their toes.

Two overs where Marsh exhibited great power hitting was the 6th over as he hit 17 runs off Deepak Hooda and the 15th over from Kaul where he picked 15 off the 17 runs that came in the over. But the basic problem for Marsh was the lack of partners and he finally perished trying to hit Bhuvneshwar out of the park.

The knuckle ball worked again for Bhuvi after he had used that to dismiss Guptill. The ball dipped on Marsh and his attempted pull went straight up, only for Hooda to finish the catch. Marsh went for 84 off 50 balls and surely deserved a hundred.

At the start of the over, KXIP needed 70 runs off the last 5 overs, not improbable in this format of the game. But with Marsh dismissed off the fourth ball of the over, it was the nail in the coffin for Punjab.

Earlier, Dhawan and Warner started off with a bang after Maxwell won the toss and decided to put Hyderabad into bat. The two put on 107-run for the opening wicket as they took the Punjab bowlers to the cleaners.

The fact that Wriddhiman Saha dropped Warner on 25 in the 5th over did not help matters as he went on to punish every KXIP bowler in sight. While Warner has been in good touch this season, Dhawan too joined in the party and played an aggressive knock.

Dhawan and Warner did not bother about the swing that the KXIP bowlers extracted in phases and kept their heads down and went on a carnage. They found the boundaries with ease and they were batting on 107/0 after 9.5 overs.

And just when it looked like KXIP would suffer more, Maxwell decided to bowl it straight and fast to Warner. Warner looked to go for the slog sweep, only to miss and get bowled for 51.

Warner’s departure did slow down the Hyderabad scoring rate a bit as there was a phase of three overs where there was not a single boundary scored, but Williamson broke the shackles as he hit Axar for a huge maximum over mid-wicket off the last ball of the 13th over.

But two overs later, Mohit Sharma dismissed Dhawan as he looked to send the bowler into the mid-wicket fence. Dhawan failed to time that one and it landed straight into Maxwell’s hands. Dhawan’s 48-ball knock included nine boundaries and a six.

Yuvraj (15) was dismissed cheaply by Maxwell, but Williamson stuck in and ensured that Hyderabad’s score crossed the 200-run mark with 31 runs coming off the last two overs. Williamson himself scored 20 of them in the 19th over off Ishant.
