Chasing a target of 183, Kolkata had started their innings brightly, with openers Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Narine taking the fight to Rising Pune Supergiant at the MCA Stadium.
In the last few games, Narine had shown his hitting prowess and the West Indian was at it against and hit three boundaries early on to announce his intentions. But Dhoni's deft touch left Narine reeling and he was dismissed before he could hurt the RPS side further.
In the third over of the innings, Washington Sundar bowled a straighter one and Gambhir guided it behind Dhoni on the leg-side. The batsmen scampered for a run but a good pick-up throw by Shardul Thakur ensured Dhoni had enough time to flick the ball towards the stumps, without even looking at them.
Replays showed that Narine was miles away from the crease when Dhoni had hit the stumps.
However, even Dhoni's brilliance couldn't stop Kolkata from registering their sixth win of the season, which also helped them consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Robin Uthappa scored 87 off 47 balls as KKR chased down the target with comfortable ease in Pune. As for RPS, they are currently sitting fourth on the points table with four wins and four losses in eight matches that they have played so far in the season.
