Risisng Pune Supergiant will look to new stars Steven Smith and Ben Stokes and not to mention Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has a point to prove.

18:53 (IST)

Arnab: Ok, time will be the best judge. Let's end it here and prepare for the match. May the best team win. Hope viewers of CricketNext enjoyed our little banter here and the way we tried to analyse the contest ahead. Time for us to give our likely Playing XIs

18:51 (IST)

Baidurjo: Well do not say none. Ashoke Dinda is still a good bowler when in rhythm. Not to forget Pune bringing in Shardul Thakur. The two could be the perfect partners up front.

18:50 (IST)

Arnab: Well a Tahir alone cannot build the pressure when Pune does not have a single good pace bowler. Neither international nor Indian. And that could well hurt them in the powerplay, especially in Ashwin's absence.

18:48 (IST)

Baidurjo: Ashwin might have been ruled out, but we have a match-winner in Imran Tahir. He is the world's best T20 bowler for a reason. He is a spinner with a pacer's aggression and loves picking wickets. 173 wickets in 148 T20 games with a strike-rate of 18. It gets better in the IPL with a rate of 15. Beware the smiling assassin.

18:46 (IST)

Arnab: Opening woes apart, we have a solid footsoldier in the middle order in Rayudu. 334 runs in 12 innings with 2 fifties in 2016 makes him one of the most consistent batsmen for MI. Also, his nemesis R Ashwin isn't playing and that makes it an icing on the cake moment for Rayudu. Also, big-hitting Pollard and Jos Buttler could also make hay in Ashwin's absence.

18:43 (IST)

Baidurjo: No doubting his skills, but an injury lay-off might have him slightly rusty. Also, indecision on whether he should open the innings of play at No. 3 doesn't often give him the clear frame of mind the skipper needs.

18:40 (IST)

Arnab: Coming to MI's batting, skipper Rohit Sharma is back. The injury concerns are over and the BCCI has cleared him to play the IPL. He has definitely been the talisman for Mumbai over the years, both with the bat and as the leader of the pack. In 2016, he scored 489 runs in 14 matches with 5 fifties. In fact, he had scored 22.29% of the team's runs. Also, of the 6 times that Rohit scored above 30, MI won five of those games and lost just once.

18:37 (IST)

Baidurjo: Still had a strike rate of 168.1. That is all I will say :)

18:37 (IST)

Arnab: Dhoni the finisher looks good only on paper these days and sadly for Pune, cricket is not a game played on paper. He was clearly unable to finish games with the elan that saw him become the best in the business in the death overs during his prime. In fact, the 2016 edition was his worst as a batsman, scoring just 284 runs in 12 innings.

18:35 (IST)

Baidurjo: The push will come and from none other than MS Dhoni, the best finisher in the history of the IPL. With the burden of captaincy removed, Dhoni can play fearless cricket just like old times. Dhoni will be the man to watch out for this year.

18:33 (IST)

Arnab: Pune fans must be reminded here that Rahane has a pretty low strike rate of 126.64 for an opener. This is one of the reasons that the team did not win too many games despite Rahane doing well at the top. Whenever a top-order batsman fails to accelerate, the team needs a push and if that does not come, the team ends up with a below-par total and that is what happened with Pune last year.

Also, Bhajji has Rahane's number, dismissing him twice in 6 innings.

18:30 (IST)

Baidurjo: Smith is not Pune's only weapon when it comes to the batting department. Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis are proven performers in the IPL. While Faf has not played a lot of T20 cricket off late and was hampered by injury woes last season, Rahane on the other hand was Pune's best batsman in 2016 with 480 runs in 14 matches. He had 6 fifties to his name.

18:28 (IST)

Arnab: Newly-appointed captain, given the responsibility to change the fortunes of a team which finished 7th last season, we will see how well Smith fares.

18:27 (IST)

Baidurjo: I really don't see the chink working here because he did really well against the Indian spinners during the Test series and looks like a batsman who has re-invented himself against the spinners. Also, MI's most experienced spinner Harbhajan Singh has nothing to write home about when bowling against Smith. Clearly Smith holds an edge here.

18:25 (IST)

Arnab: I must admit I am a fan of Smith's batting and he is definitely a very effective batsman across all formats, but he too has a chink in his armour. Smith is susceptible against quality left-arm spin and the young Krunal Pandya showcased his abilities for Mumbai last season, dismissing key players like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers and this could be his chance to shine yet again and make a case for himself for the national team.

18:23 (IST)

Baidurjo: No denying Bumrah's skills. But that brings me to another Pune batsman who is definitely in the form of his life. 499 runs in the just concluded Test series against India, Steve Smith is the man. More importantly, he is a hit even in the T20 format. In the 2016 edition, he scored 270 runs in 8 games with one century. He is also someone who plays better with the captain's hat on him.

18:19 (IST)

Arnab: If you are talking about Stokes's hitting ability in the death, then I must inform you that MI have perhaps the best death bowler in T20 cricket in the world at present in Jasprit Bumrah. In 19 T20Is for India, he has an economy of only 7.3, the best among all the bowlers playing in the IPL. He is also a yorker specialist and has the ability to pick wickets at any time in the innings.

18:17 (IST)

Baidurjo: And next up can't stop mentioning the Big Ben who will definitely bolster Pune's batting as well as bowling with his presence. Rs14.5 crore spent on the England all-rounder alone. Speaking to me, Pune owner Sanjiv Goenka had said it was a well thought out decision to buy him at the auction. He has scored 421 runs in 24 matches since 2015 with a strike rate of 147.2. Not to forget, he is at his best in the slog over as a batsman. He will also add to Pune's somewhat weak pace bowling line-up.

18:13 (IST)

Arnab: Well I agree with you on the Indian angle. Let's see how it goes for Pune once their campaign unfolds.

18:12 (IST)

Baidurjo: I don't know about Australia, but when it comes to the IPL, Smith has an impressive record, winning 6 out of the 9 games that he has led the team. Also, Dhoni being a difficult person to have around when you are a new leader doesn't stand anymore as we saw him help Kohli from the word go in the series against England. He is truly a team player.

18:10 (IST)

Arnab: Well it might sound good on paper, but then, it is always difficult for a new captain to take charge in the dressing room. Also, when you have someone like Dhoni around, who has played in the league for the past 9 years as skipper, sometimes it just might become a little daunting to manage the team in his presence. Another small reminder, Smith has not really set the stage on fire as a T20 captain for Australia.

18:07 (IST)

Baidurjo: Thanks Arnab that was really polite. Coming to Pune, the team wears a new look not only when it comes to the players, but also with Steve Smith taking over from MS Dhoni as the skipper of the team. He is a dynamic leader and is in good form. It should be the ideal push the franchise needs going into this season.

18:05 (IST)

Arnab: Indeed, so let's get started with the analysis and I give you the chance to fire the first salvo, since the team you were backing won on Wednesday.

18:04 (IST)

Baidurjo: No doubt MI has the experience, but from the looks of it, it seems an old squad. Pune on the other hand has the right mix of youth and experience and are raring to go under a new skipper in Steve Smith. This team looks good to go the distance this time round.

18:02 (IST)

Arnab: Yes Mumbai Indians have been one of the heavyweights of the league since the year of its inception and the core of the team still remains the same. So, there will be no dearth of experience in this unit.
