IPL 2017: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Gujarat Lions - Preview

Arnab: The toss is done and there is still no Faulkner and Tye, at least they have removed Manpreet Gony. Let's see how far the four overseas power hitters take Gujarat. That's it from me and Baidurjo, follow the match through our Live Blog here:

IPL 2017, SRH vs GL, Live Score: David Warner Opts to Field in Hyderabad

Baidurjo: Did you mention McCullum, he has been dismissed thrice by a certain Bipul Sharma. So don't expect much. Also Rashid Khan is in top form, so wait and watch

Arnab: Both Raina and McCullum have scored more than 200 runs against SRH in 6 matches over th eyears and they have a great strike rate too. Expect these two war horses to deliver.

Baidurjo: If you are talking about head to heads then I must inform you that your captain Suresh Raina is a bunny too. Has been dismissed twice by SRH's most consistent bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Arnab: If there is one man wo knows all about dismissing Yuvraj Singh in T20s, it is James Faulkner, dismissed the southpaw thrice cool

Baidurjo: You still want to try your luck, after losing the first two matches to me. Anyway, what more cn I say than just mention the name Yuvraj Singh. The southpaw is back with a bang. Scored his fastest IPL fifty in the last match.

Infact, Yuvraj is enjoying his best IPL stint ever with SRH. Showed great intent, and attacking instincts of old in the last match. His IPL career has seen a massive upsurge after joining SRH.

Last two seasons, SRH won 72% matches when Yuvraj was in the team and only 57% without him.
Yuvi has strike rate of close to 150 in wins for SRH.

Arnab: You have a valid point but Brad Hodge knows Andrew Tye well, so that's where I am coming from. Anyway I will stick to Gujarat, fire your first Hyderabad salvo.

Baidurjo: The Tye suggestion isn't a bad one. Only I don't see it happening because making too many changes so early in the tournament could signal instability and that is something teams don't want.

Arnab: Faulkner's ability to score freely in the death is well known. Also he has played some stellar knocks in limited overs cricket for Australia as well, while playing in India and outside as well. So he should definitely walk into the playing XI, in place of Smith.

Given how the pacers bowled in the last match. I would also get Andrew Tye into the team in place of Jason Roy. McCullum can open with Dinesh Karthik and an Indian batsman, like Ishan Kishan or Akshdeep Nath can be drafted into the middle order in place of Praveen Kumar/Dhawal Kulkarni.

Also Manpreet Gony has to go, he doesn't belong at this level. A half fit Munaf is better than Gony

Baidurjo: Also let's talk about his batting. Has a strike rate of nearly 160 in the IPL, while batting in the last 5 overs. His SR is also way better than that of Smith at the number 6 position.

Arnab: Yes, and he also has the knack of getting those wickets in the middle. But with no Bravo around, he will be called upon to bowl in the death and that is where his economy goes for a toss, and leaks runs at more than 9 per over. Over the years batsmen have deciphered his slower delivery and Faulkner will have to up his game in order to fox the batters like he used to in the initial stages of the IPL, when he wore the Rajasthan jersey.

Baidurjo: Let's back our argument with some numbers then. In international T20s, Faulkner has a very good economy rate in the powerplay and as well as middle overs, giving away runs at the rate of less than 7 runs an over and that should come in handy for the Lions, who leaked runs throughout against Kolkata Knight Riders in their opener.

Arnab: Yes, Faulkner's absence from the first match was a bit surprising. The fact that he is also a very useful batsman lower down the order means he should wlk into the XI in place of Dwayne Smith, who looks completely unfit.

He looked like an apology for a professional cricketer in the first match and his bowling was abysmal to say the least.

Baidurjo: Rightly put, there is no guarantee that McCullum, Roy, Finch and Dwayne Smith will all contribute and take the score past 200 every time they bat. Infact, with the likes of Raina and Karthik around, the idea should definitely be to strengthen the bowling. So I would suggest Faulkner's inclusion for sure.

Arnab: I think the decision to overload the team with only overseas batting talent backfired in the last match. One must understand that there are only 20 overs to bat and the idea of batting a team out of a match works well only if you have the bowlers to back that plan. Gujarat's Indian bowling is perhaps the weakest in the tournament and that is the reason why they should strengthen their bowling, What do you suggest??

Baidurjo: Rightly put Arnab, Gujarat Lions' balance has gone for a toss due to the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo, so the job will be difficult for them. What sort of a line up do you think they should go in with today?

This is Arnab, editor of Cricketnext and I have with me Baidurjo, our Cricket correspondent. Today we have decided to bat for the same team for atleast some time as the Gujarat Lions really need some help :)
