Ishan Kishan May Not Be A Part of The Indian XI For Series Decider: Sanjay Manjrekar

Former India batsman and currently one of the best analysts of the game in the country, Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his thoughts on India’s combination and made a big prediction for the series decider against England in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Manjrekar feels that the Indian think-tank will back out of form opener, KL Rahul at the expense of Ishan Kishan even if the latter is match-fit.

Rahul has been woeful with the bat in the series thus far failing in all the four matches – he has scored in binary digits in three encounters! The Indian opener has three ducks in his last five T20I innings. Kishan, on the other hand, gave a Player of the Match performance on debut and produced a match-defining 56 off just 32 deliveries in the second match of the series. He sat out of the last encounter due to a groin injury.

Manjrekar stated that Kohli had made his views on Rahul clear at the beginning of the series and the management will back the stylish batsman till the very end.

“It gets a bit tricky now considering that this is a game both teams desperately want to win. I would love to have Ishan Kishan back if the niggle is out of the way but let’s see how it goes. I have a feeling Ishan Kishan may not play, which is unfortunate, and that niggle may have also helped the India team out because they want to keep backing KL Rahul. They want to give KL Rahul a long rope. He gets another game and they tell him that because you’re out of form and you’re a class player, you’ll get another game.”

Manjrekar sounded a warning though and said that Rahul should be wary of wasting precious deliveries at the top of the order, especially in the powerplay. He added that can come to haunt India citing Dawid Malan’s knock which came to bite England later in the match.

“But Rahul doesn’t get the license to consume more balls than necessary. It’s good that his 14 off 17 balls didn’t come to hurt India but it hurt England for sure because that’s exactly what Malan got; 14 of 17 balls.”

Manjrekar also believes that India will not tinker much with the combination for the decider. The home team have preferred to go in with an extra batsman throughout the series. The former India middle-order batsman also added that India will not try to experiment too much in the big match by giving players like Tewatia or Deepak Chahar a chance.

Yuvraj Singh Will Definitely have Suryakumar Yadav in his World Cup squad

“I think they are okay for the moment. You might think they are a bit batting heavy because very often they have not used all their batting because Washington Sundar is a batsman worth the salt in T20 cricket. I don’t see India making any changes with regards to the quantity of bowlers. Maybe, they will have a look at Washington Sundar and the pitch being the way it is and if they bowl again in the second half of the game, they might think of somebody like a Tewatia.”

Manjrekar added that India will not play Axar Patel in such a crucial match as England boasted of a number of left-handed batsmen and the natural angle will bring the ball back in which will make it easy for the batters to hit the spinner with the spin.

“They won’t play Axar Patel as they have far too many left-handers in that England team. Also trying out Tewatia is a risk I doubt they will take.”
