Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 21 of the IPL 2020 in Abu Dhabi. This rivalry is traditionally considered to be one of the fiercest in IPL history though both the teams haven’t looked at their best in this year’s competition. We look at some of the key match-ups that could decide the outcome of the match.

1. SHANE WATSON (CSK) vs PAT CUMMINS (KKR): Shane Watson is one of the premier all-rounders in IPL history with 3710 runs in 135 innings at a strike rate of 139.31. He has recorded 4 hundreds and 20 fifties. He gave a Player of the Match performance (83 off 53 deliveries) against KXIP in Dubai. Watson can be ruthlessly destructive and would look to make full use of the fielding restrictions in the powerplay.

To stop him would be his fellow Australian bowler – Pat Cummins.

Cummins hasn’t yet found his rhythm in IPL 2020 and has neither been amongst the wickets nor able to control the flow of runs. But he is widely regarded as the best fast bowler in the world along with Rabada and Bumrah. This Aussie battle could provide some fireworks!

2. SAM CURRAN (CSK) vs SUNIL NARINE (KKR)

Sam Curran is a utility player who always gives more than 100% in every match he plays. He has had a decent tournament with the ball. Sunil Narine has been struggling in this year’s edition with just 27 runs in 4 matches. He may try to hit his way into form and target Curran in the powerplay.

3. FAF DU PLESSIS (CSK) vs ANDRE RUSSELL (KKR)

Faf du Plessis has been one of the premier batsmen of the tournament. He is the second-highest scorer of IPL 2020 with 282 runs in 5 matches including three fifties. He has been Mr Consistent for CSK. Along with the runs, the rate at which he has scored them – he has an overall strike rate of 150 in the tournament – is commendable. The CSK opener will be up against Andre Russell – the bowler – in the powerplay. Russell hasn’t been in the best of form in the competition but a good performance with the ball might just be the trigger to unleash Russell – the destructive batsman!

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 21 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in Abu Dhabi later in the evening. While CSK will be upbeat after their thumping record-breaking 10-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai. KKR would want to get back to winning ways after the defeat against Delhi Capitals in Sharjah. We look at 5 players who could have the maximum impact in the match.

Shane Watson (CSK): Shane Watson is one of the premier all-rounders in IPL history with 3710 runs in 135 innings at a strike rate of 139.31. He has recorded 4 hundreds and 20 fifties. He gave a Player of the Match performance (83 off 53 deliveries) against KXIP in Dubai. He has also accounted for 92 wickets in the IPL. He had an outstanding 2018 with the bat aggregating 555 runs at a strike rate of 154.59 including a match-winning unbeaten 117 off just 57 deliveries against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final in Mumbai.

Sam Curran (CSK): Sam Curran is a utility player who always gives more than 100% in every match he plays. He has already played two mini cameos from different batting positions in this year’s IPL.

Faf du Plessis (CSK): Faf du Plessis has been the second-highest scorer of IPL 2020 with 282 runs in 5 matches including three fifties. He has scored 54.54% of the total runs scored by other CSK batsmen in the competition. Along with the runs, the rate at which he has scored them – he has an overall strike rate of 150 in the tournament – is commendable. It is significantly higher than the average strike rate of other CSK players this season – 130.55.

Sunil Narine (KKR): Sunil Narine is the leading wicket-taker for KKR in the IPL with 124 wickets in 113 innings. He is the third most restrictive spinner in the history of the IPL with an economy rate of just 6.73! He has picked 6 four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul in his IPL career. Narine has been completely out of form in IPL 2020, both with the bat and ball. But he would know that he is just one match away from finding that magic touch. Narine picked 24 and 21 wickets and was the highest wicket-taker for KKR in their victorious campaigns, both in 2012 and 2014. He is also a ferocious batsman at the top of the order with a strike rate of 163.19– the second-highest for KKR after Andre Russell.

Andre Russell (KKR): Andre Russell has also looked out of sorts in IPL 2020. He has not yet produced any significant performance with the bat or ball. Russell is the most destructive batsman in the history of the IPL. He has scored 1448 runs in 55 innings in the IPL at a rate of 184.69 - the highest in the tournament’s history! He has the record of the maximum number (15) of 200-plus strike rate innings (min. runs 30) for KKR.

For a bowling attack which has the likes of Pat Cummins and Kuldeep Yadav in their arsenal, KKR bowlers have had a disappointing outing so far. Andre Russell with four wickets in four matches is currently their highest wicket-taker this season. However, Rahul Tripathi feels that his side's bowlers have a measure of the Abu Dhabi pitch and they can make life difficult for Chennai Super Kings batsmen when they face each other later tonight.

Preview: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will clash with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 21 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in Abu Dhabi on the 7th of October.

CSK will be upbeat after their thumping record-breaking 10-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai. It was just the result they needed to lift the morale of the side after one of their worst starts to any IPL season.

KKR would want to get back to winning ways after the defeat against Delhi Capitals in Sharjah.

Chennai Super Kings

At last CSK played like three-time IPL Champions and hammered KXIP in a record breaking victory. Faf du Plessis has been the Player of the Tournament so far for CSK – he has been their Mr Consistent performing in every match when others have struggled and failed. The management will be pleased that Shane Watson was back at his best in the previous encounter.

But CSK can’t rely only on their openers. They need the middle order to fire. MS Dhoni needs to bat up the order and take control of the innings much earlier than what he has been doing in the tournament. Kedar Jadhav has just managed to score 51 runs in 3 innings and needs to make a significant contribution.

Deepak Chahar has been CSK’s most restrictive bowler going at less than 8 an over. Ravindra Jadeja has been unusually expensive with an economy rate of 9.55.

Kolkata Knight Riders

The KKR batting has not fired to its full potential in IPL 2020. Sunil Narine has been completely out of form – both with the bat and ball. The West Indian has just managed to score 27 runs in his 4 innings and also not been restrictive going at 8.5 per over. No batsman has played that one great defining innings yet for KKR. Shubman Gill has been their leading scorer with 152 runs in 4 innings. Even the destructive Andre Russell – who has the highest strike rate in IPL history – has looked out of sorts and just managed to score 48 runs at a strike rate of 145.45 in the tournament. KKR need to shuffle their batting order. Eoin Morgan should bat at number 4.

The bowling hasn’t looked threatening with no bowler looking to take wickets. Pat Cummins has had a disappointing IPL 2020 so far picking just 2 wickets from 4 matches also going at 9.28 per over.
