Missing Out on England's World Cup-winning Squad was Disappointing: David Willey

England seamer David Willey said he was disappointed to miss out on a place in England's World Cup squad as he marked his return to the global arena by setting up the world champions' six-wicket win over Ireland at Southampton on Thursday.

Willey, appearing in his first ODI since being left out of England's World Cup-winning squad for Jofra Archer, took 5-30 as Ireland were dismissed for just 172 in a match that marked the return of white-ball cricket from the coronavirus lockdown.

"I wasn't sure if my opportunity would come again after the last 12 months. Obviously I've been part of the group four years, to miss out at the 11th hour was difficult," Willey said after the opportunity.

"For me it's about going out and enjoying every minute. Every opportunity could be the last one. As I got closer to World Cup selection, you start thinking about that more. But that's come and gone now.

"I play my best cricket when I'm enjoying it. Hopefully the results keep coming."

England skipper Eoin Morgan also hailed Morgan, who took 4-12 as Ireland slumped to 28-5.

"Willey had an outstanding day. Given the story of Willey missing out on the World Cup squad, it's a fantastic comeback. He and Mahmood were outstanding.

"Against a relatively low score, it's nice to get a partnership going. We're delighted to get playing, delighted to start the series. The more times we can see guys in pressure situations, the more we find out about them."
