New Delhi: Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni survived a scare on Friday morning as the hotel in which he was staying along with his Jharkhand teammates, caught fire.

All the players were rescued safely after the Welcome Hotel in Dwarka caught fire. To make matters worse the fire alarm in the hotel didn't go off.

MS Dhoni and his Jharkhand teammates were in town to take part in the semi-final of the Vijay Hazare trophy. The semi-final between Jharkhand and Bengal has now been postponed and will be played on Saturday instead.

Speaking exclusively to Cricketnext, Jharkhand spinner Shahbaz Nadeem said that the players were asked to evacuate the hotel at around 6 am in the morning, just before the players were about to leave the hotel for the Palam grounds, where the match was scheduled to take place.

"We were asked to evacuate the hotel and were told that a fire has broken out. When we went out of the hotel we saw a lot of smoke coming out, although the fire had been put out by then and was at no point out of control," Nadeem said.

The left-arm spinner further informed that the fire was caused due to a short-circuit in the basement of the hotel, which had a lot of commercial shops.

Thirty fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused by 9.45 AM. Cooling operations are on," said a senior official from Delhi Fire Services.

Police said that the fire broke out in a Reliance showroom. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
