New Delhi: Mohsin Khan is the latest pace sensation from Uttar Pradesh — a state which in the recent past has given India the likes of Praveen Kumar, RP Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Hailing from Sambhal, near Moradabad, the young pacer rose through the ranks in UP, representing the state in U16 and U19 cricket before finally making his senior debut in January 2018 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

A shoulder injury almost derailed his career but the teenager fought back and grabbed the opportunity in the senior team with both hands.

He took 9 wickets in 4 games in the Super League stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy, and then was picked up in the auction by Mumbai Indians at a base price of Rs. 20 lakh.

The youngster credits his state captain Suresh Raina for giving him the opportunity. "Raina bhaiya encouraged me a lot, I was nervous as I had never played at this level before. But he used to field at mid-on when I bowled and kept on encouraging me. He asked me to bowl freely and without any tension," Mohsin was quoted as saying by a local news channel.

The youngster isn't looking too far ahead and wants to see this as a learning experience.

"Mumbai Indians have a lot of experienced coaches. I will work on my game and look to improve my game. It's a huge opportunity, I am a bit nervous going into the camp with the likes of Bumrah, Tendulkar and will do my best to impress them,” he had said, ahead of the tournament.

Son of a police officer, Mohsin looks up to Zaheer Khan as his idol and wants to meet him to take tips on the game. "Zaheer Khan is a legend and I have grown up watching his videos, I have never had a chance to talk to him but I would like to learn from him, the way he swung the ball and also mastered the knuckle-ball, these are the things I want to learn as well," adds Mohsin.

'IPL Auction Turning Point in my Life'

His father Multan Khan added that the IPL auction was a turning point in the family's lives. "I was watching the auction but then saw so many kids going unsold, my heart started to sink a little bit. Then my wife told me Mohsin's name has come. I just asked my wife what's written and she said sold, I couldn't hold back my tears, that was a big turning point in my life," says Multan, with a sense of pride in his voice.

Mohsin though knows that the long journey has just begun for him and that he can't be distracted by the glitz and glamour of the IPL.

"I will double the hard work now. I also have to grind it out at the domestic level and perform well there, only then can I realise my dream of playing for India," he says.
