It was the second ODI between hosts India and Australia in Nagpur in 2019. The home team were 1-0 up in the five-match series. Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to field first. Pat Cummins got the big wicket of Rohit Sharma in the first over of the match. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli took the score to 38 in the 9th over before Glenn Maxwell trapped the left-hander leg before wicket for 21. Ambati Rayudu’s dismissal made it 75 for 3 after 17 overs.

The greatest ODI batsman of all-time then settled down and played the role of the playmaker from one end. He ran brilliantly between the wickets and got the odd boundary and soon registered yet another half-century in the format off just 55 deliveries. He found an able partner in Vijay Shankar and the pair stitched together an 81-run stand for the fourth-wicket. Shankar took the risks and scored 46 off 41 deliveries while Kohli contributed 31 off 30 balls.

India lost the wickets of Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni in quick succession and at 171 for 6 in the 33rd over were in a spot of bother. That did not deter Kohli who continued to go about proceedings as usual. He forged a crucial 67-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja contributing 43 off 40 balls to the partnership. During the course of the partnership he recorded another ODI hundred off 107 deliveries. Kohli was finally dismissed for 116 off 120 deliveries and shortly after India were bowled out for 250 in the 49th over.

In an innings where almost the entire Indian batting order had failed Kohli had put his hands up and delivered scoring big runs at a high rate under pressure.

Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja gave Australia a splendid start but the skipper’s exit with the team score at 83 (by Kuldeep Yadav) led to a mini collapse as the visitors started losing wickets at regular intervals. Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey threatened but the Indian bowling unit held their nerves and pulled off a fine 8-run victory bowling out Australia for 242 with three deliveries still remaining in the innings.

Kuldeep Yadav picked three wickets while Bumrah and Vijay Shankar chipped in with a couple each but the hero for India on the day was their captain Virat Kohli who had produced yet another masterclass display with the bat in ODI cricket.
