Johannesburg: A disappointed Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting has urged his teammates to show a bit of character in the fifth and final One-Dayer against the Proteas despite trailing the five-match series 1-3 so that they gain some momentum before the series against Pakistan to be played on neutral venues in UAE.
"We were not able to do well this time, and the South Africans outplayed us in the last three matches in all facets of the game. So they deserve to be where they are," has been quoted as saying in the South African media after the Port Elizabeth defeat by 61 runs.
"We did like to finish the tour on a high, so hopefully there will be a bit of character in the team when the guys pitch up on Friday," he added.
Ponting's gamble of putting the opposition in to bat first back-fired after his bowlers struggled to get vital breakthroughs with comeback king Herschelle Gibbs slamming a ton and AB de Villiers making a neat 84 to help their team pile up 318.
"Herschelle obviously played beautifully, he played a sensational innings," the Aussie skipper said praising Gibbs' first big knock after his comeback from injury lay-off.
"I thought de Villiers was also outstanding. We needed someone at the top to go on and make a big hundred, but we didn't really have that," he added.
