R Ashwin is India's Most Valuable Player, Says Kapil Dev

"To me he is the team's allrounder, a bowling allrounder. The team depends on him, he is the most important cricketer, he is the one who can change the game singlehandedly. I will regard him as the most valuable player for Team India."

R Ashwin is India's Most Valuable Player, Says Kapil Dev

Former captain Kapil Dev was delighted to see so many Tests featuring in India's home season after a long time.

India's next assignment would be the three-match Test series against New Zealand, with the first Test – which would also be India's 500th – beginning on September 22 at the Green Park Stadium, Kanpur.

This Test would mark the beginning of a long home season, wherein India are scheduled to play as many as 13 Tests against New Zealand, England, Australia and Bangladesh.

"I think after a long time we are going to see a home series so big, as a player I always look upto Test cricket which is real cricket. It will be a test of nerves and all the planning and everything you will see in Tests. This reminds me of the 1980s," Kapil Dev told reporters in New Delhi on Monday.

Arguably India's greatest allrounder, Kapil also said that the offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is fast gaining the reputation of being a very useful hand with the bat is India's most valuable player.

"To me he is the team's allrounder, a bowling allrounder. The team depends on him, he is the most important cricketer, he is the one who can change the game singlehandedly. I will regard him as the most valuable player for Team India."

"He is one bowler who has the ability to win a match for India in one session. He can pick up five wickets in five overs and change the game, Kapil added.

The 57-year-old also voiced his support for preparing pitches offering assistance to home teams, saying there is nothing wrong in taking that advantage.

"If you are playing at home they why not? Offcourse you should take advantage of home conditions. If you go to Australia or South Africa, they are not going to give you a turning track," he said.

"My support is where you can win the Test matches not absolutely rubbish pitches but good pitches where your strength will come out. No country will give you the pitch which you want."
