Rahul Tewatia, Varun Chakravarthy Fail Fitness Test Ahead of T20I Series vs England

Rahul Tewatia, Varun Chakravarthy Fail Fitness Test Ahead of T20I Series vs England

The BCCI’s fitness test at the NCA saw a total of around 30 cricketers participate, including the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, T. Natarajan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, among others.

After receiving his maiden Team India call-up, Haryana’s Rahul Tewatia’s possible debut might be delayed as the all-rounder has failed to clear the fitness test mandated by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI). Tewatia, who took the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 by storm with his explosive batting, was called up for Team India’s upcoming T20I series against England.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Tewatia and spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s participation in the upcoming T20I series against England remains uncertain after the duo failed to clear the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru recently.

As per BCCI’s new selection rules and parameters, it is mandatory for the players to clear one of the two fitness criterias to be considered for selection. Team India players are expected to achieve a score of 17:1 in the Yo-yo test or covering 2km in 8.3 minutes to be able to match the Board’s fitness criteria and be eligible for selection.

Other than Tewatia, another Indian Premier League (IPL) star Chakravarthy too faces similar difficulties, as the spinner failed in the fitness test at the NCA. The spinner, who impressed with the ball for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in last year’s IPL edition, had earlier received his maiden national call up for the T20I fixtures against Australia in 2020. Sadly, he had to miss the series due to an injury, however, he earned his second chance for the T20Is against England, but now faces a possible delay in making his national debut.

Even though the initial failure puts their selection in serious trouble, it is not the end of the road for the young cricketers. Both Tewatia and Chakravarthy will receive another chance to prove their fitness, as all players who fail to clear the fitness test in the first attempt will be given a second chance to prove their fitness and endurance levels.

The BCCI’s fitness test at the NCA saw a total of around 30 cricketers participate, including the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, T. Natarajan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, among others.

After the four match Test series, India will lock horns with England in a five-match T20I series. It will be held in Ahmedabad from March 12.
