Yet another Ranji round comes to an end, with a handful of notable performances across all groups, and a couple of farewells as well. Delhi veteran Gautam Gambhir bid adieu to competitive cricket, as did Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah.

Meanwhile, players from the plate division seem to be making the most of the challenge of rubbing shoulders with the country’s best.

Haryana managed to register their second win of the tournament after they beat Tripura by 55 runs, while Madhya Pradesh won their encounter versus by Hyderabad by an innings and 253 runs. Tamil Nadu too registered their first win, beating Kerala by 151 runs in Chennai.

Saurashtra lead the points table in Elite group A & B, while Rajasthan are placed on the top in group C. Uttarakhand have emerged as toppers in the plate group.

Here are the Ranji takeaways from final day of round five encounters:

Gambhir the team man

Delhi needed 88 to win the match against Andhra, but had only around 40 minutes to achieve the target. It seemed like Gambhir would at least get a chance to bat one final time, but he chose to send other aggressive options as Delhi attempted a win. They scored 41 for 2 in 5 overs when the game ended, with Gambhir not batting.

Here's a stat to show how big a player he was.

Avesh Khan bags 12 wickets

The 21-year-old has announced his arrival by claiming 12 wickets for Madhya Pradesh against Hyderabad. He bagged seven in the first innings, and five in the second to take his side to an innings and 253 run win against Hyderabad. The other star for MP was debutant batsman Ajay Rohera who slammed an unbeaten 267 in the first innings. Avesh now has 28 wickets from five matches.

Parvez Rasool’s all-round performance fails to lift J&K

For long Rasool has been the lone warrior in the J&K team. This time, against Uttar Pradesh, was no different. Rasool scored 87 in the first innings and claimed six wickets in the match, but that was not enough, as he didn’t get the support of rest of the team, be it batting or bowling. UP had a comfortable six-wicket win chasing a target of 214.

Jharkhand pip Odisha by two runs

A match that Jharkhand should have won easily went down to the wire. Chasing a target of 260, Odisha kept losing wickets at regular intervals. But Subhranshu Senapati didn’t lose hope and kept going about his business and slammed a patient 157. Such was the situation that at one stage Odisha were 193/9 and almost lost the match. But Senapati strung a partnership of 64 with number 11 Dhiraj Singh. But in the end, Jharkhand fast bowler Varun Aaron held his nerve to break the partnership and win the match for his team.

Milind Kumar highest-run getter, Deepak Dhapola tops bowlers list

ranji
