Ranji Takeaways: Gujarat Register Historic Win Over Mumbai; Bengal Beat Tamil Nadu in a Thriller

It was a day of results in the Ranji Trophy as all but two matches produced outright winners. Here are the major takeaways from Day 4 of the fourth round of Ranji Trophy matches.

Karnataka Beat Maharashtra; Gujarat Down Mumbai at Wankhede

Gujarat registered a convincing nine-wicket win over Mumbai at Wankhede as skipper Priyank Panchal scored a ton to help his side chase down 206 with ease. He was well supported by Kathan Patel, who made a half-century. With this, Gujarat became the first team to register four outright victories over Mumbai.

In the other big clash, it was Karnataka who came out trumps against Maharashtra, registering a seven-wicket victory. Devdutt Padikkal and Dega Nischal put on a 121-run opening stand, which helped the home side cruise to victory.

Captains Lead From the Front

In a unique coincidence, seven captains scored centuries in the fourth round action. Panchal for Gujarat against Mumbai, Rasool for J&K against Services in a losing cause, Prashant Chopra for Himachal Pradesh against Hyderabad - again in a losing cause, Faiz Fazal scored a ton as Vidarbha registered a ten-wicket victory over Chhattisgarh. Sachin Baby helped Kerala fightback against Madhya Pradesh but it wasn't enough in the end as MP chased down 194 with five wickets to spare.

Rajat Bhatia for Uttarakhand and Yashpal Singh for Meghalaya also registered tons in the Plate Group.

Bengal Triumph in a Thriller

After giving away a 74-run lead against Tamil Nadu, Bengal fought back as Writtick Chatterjee picked 5/22, which helped them dismiss Tamil Nadu for 141. Abhishek Raman scored a half-century as Bengal set about chasing 216, but a middle-order collapse left them struggling at 150-7. Pradipta Pramanik's crucial 25-run innings in the end helped Bengal edge past the line, registering a one-wicket victory.
