Record-Breaking Saurashtra Captain Jaydev Shah to Retire After Karnataka Game

Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah will retire from all cricket after his side's Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in Rajkot starting Thursday (December 6).

Jaydev, the son of former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, has played 119 first-class matches and has led Saurashtra in a record 111 matches, the most by anyone in domestic cricket. He has also played 65 List A matches and 36 T20s.

However, his exploits with the bat are modest at best. He averages just over 29 in first-class cricket with 5253 runs and ten centuries since making his debut in 2002-03. He averages 20.26 and 16.20 in List A and T20 cricket.

The 35-year-old has been in better form this season, having made 81* and 165 in his last two matches, against Gujarat and Baroda respectively.

Jaydev has also had a taste of IPL; he has been picked up by Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions through the years, but has not once got into the playing XI.

Under his captaincy, Saurashtra became runners-up in the Ranji Trophy in 2012-13 and 2015-16 and also made it to the semi-finals twice. He also led Saurashtra to victory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2007-08.
