Smith, De Villiers Top Two Picks in PSL Draft

Former Australia captain Steve Smith was picked up in the Pakistan Super League player draft by the unnamed ‘sixth team’ on Tuesday.  The 29-year-old was picked at No. 2 in the Platinum category which will see him paid between $160,000 and the maximum for one player is $250,000 for the month-long tournament.

The fourth edition of the competition is set to commence on February 14 and end on March 17, just 12 days prior to the conclusion of his ban from Australia's international and domestic competitions.

Smith is one of three Australians in the PSL, alongside 'Sixth Team' teammate Dan Christian and Quetta Gladiators’ all-rounder Shane Watson.

Earlier in the day, Cricket Australia (CA) rejected the Australian Cricketers' Association's (ACA) submission for the bans handed to Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft be reduced.

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers was the overall No. 1 pick in the draft, with Lahore Qalandars attaining his services from the Platinum category – the highest-paid group.

Veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi will also be joining Smith in the unpurchased team which will be captained by Pakistan international Shoaib Malik, while former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was picked up by Peshawar Zalmi after backing out of a deal to mentor for Islamabad United.
