The coronavirus pandemic had brought life as we know it to a halt, especially through most of 2020 as India dealt with a rise in cases across the country that only started to show signs of receding towards the beginning of 2021. India has also gone on a massive vaccination drive in a bid to combat the virus, with healthcare workers as well as people aged 45-60 with existing co-morbidities getting first preference since they are at higher risk of both contracting as well as suffering long term effects from the Covid-19 virus. India head coach Ravi Shastri was recently pictured getting his first dose of the vaccine but like everything else surrounding the former India international, it became a case of social media having fun with the picture.

It started off with a parody account tweeting ‘Doctors extracting alcohol to make sanitizer’ along with Shastri’s picture and others soon followed suit.

This isn’t the only time in recent memory when Shastri has been targetted on social media. Writer and columnist Shobhaa De probably poked fun at his alleged love for alcohol in a recent post.

De went ahead with a post featuring Shastri’s image with the headlines, “You thought I’d stay in a dry state for 5 days,” and followed it up with a caption saying “smart.” Gujarat is a dry state with no public consumption of alcohol barring those with special permits.

The comment came in the aftermath of the 3rd Test match between India and England, which India won by a thumping margin of 10 wickets. The final Test of the series gets underway on Thursday (March 4).
