Sourav Ganguly Stumped By BCCI CoA's Urgency In Naming Coach

New Delhi: Cricket Advisory Committee member (CAC) Sourav Ganguly has said that he will speak to Indian captain Virat Kohli at the earliest, whenever he is available for a teleconference, after the BCCI Committee of Administrators swung into action and asked the CAC to complete the process for selection of the coach at the earliest.

Ganguly while speaking to the media at an event has said that the decision to defer the announcement was made after taking permission from the CoA and expressed his 'surprise' at the CoA's sudden directive of closing the process at the earliest, according to media reports.

The former India captain was also quoted as saying that he regrets the fact that the entire episode is being viewed as a personal battle between him and former Team India director and current head coach aspirant Ravi Shastri.

"Sad it's being made as Sourav vs Ravi. I need to address that. I will speak to COA," Ganguly was quoted as saying by the India Today.

Cricketnext had earlier reported that the Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators have told the Cricket Advisory Committee to make the announcement on Tuesday itself. It has also been learnt from highly placed sources in the board that Ganguly and Laxman were given the option to conduct a teleconference with Kohli on Monday itself, but the same couldn't happen as Ganguly insisted on meeting Virat Kohli in person.

"The announcements made yesterday were done after taking everyone's permission. I personally believe that we should meet (Kohli) in person and speak to him but if there are people who have other opinions then I will respect that. We can get hold of him on a call and we will speak to him at the earliest," Ganguly told the media at an event.

Speaking to CricketNext, a BCCI official said that while the initial decision was set to be taken after Kohli returns from America next week, things took a turn late on Monday night after discussions between the COA and BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.

“Till around 9:30 in the evening, it was decided that the coach’s call would be made after the CAC meets with Kohli once he is back from America. But then things started rolling and the COA made it clear to the CAC that the announcement should be made today itself,” the official said.

While there are different views on the matter and speculations remain rife about who is finally going to get the nod, CricketNext has learnt through highly placed sources in the board that former Team Director Ravi Shastri might just not be the frontrunner as it looks from the outside due to his good equation with Kohli.

Speaking to CricketNext, a source in the know of developments has made it clear that while the CAC is yet to make their stance public, their choice is none other than the Nawab of Najafgarh — Sehwag. But the committee does not wish to rub Kohli the wrong way and if the latter feels that Shastri is indeed the man for the job, he can have the former team director at the helm, albeit at his own responsibility.

“The CAC met the five candidates available — Shastri, Sehwag, Richard Pybus, Tom Moody and Lalchand Rajput. And while everyone put in a good presentation, three men who stood out were Shastri, Sehwag and Moody. But after much deliberation and looking at the pros and cons, the CAC believes that Sehwag is the right candidate for the job as he impressed with his vision for the 2019 World Cup. Also, Sehwag had to answer the tricky question of how he would handle the coach-captain scenario and he was clear that cricket was a game where the captain held fort and the coach’s job was to man the backroom.

“But then, the door isn’t closed on Shastri either. The CAC was indeed impressed by his presentation and it was then decided that Kohli should be brought into the scene and the skipper should make the call because at the end of the day, it is the captain who will have to spend time with the coach and the equation cannot be compromised. But, what is understandable is that the CAC will not take responsibility if Kohli goes for Shastri and that will be a call taken by the skipper,” he explained.

Interestingly, another official said that that the Indian captain will now be under pressure to make a direct call and go for Shastri. The official went on to add that while it is no secret that Kohli wants Shastri, it is also true that he shares a good relation with Viru and it will need another champion stroke from the skipper to come out triumphant of this situation.

Clearly the COA wants the CAC to take the call and not put Kohli in a tight spot.
